Like many cities in the world, Beirut has become a place with minimal flora on its surface. The city has become so consumed with urbanization and infrastructural development that green places are fast disappearing. In any way, this is neither good for the residents nor the environment at the local level. Bliss Street is a famous street in the Ras Beirut district, and it is mostly populated by students of the American University of Beirut. The street is thus relatively busy and historical due its architecture. This means that planting and maintaining trees is bound to be an uphill task.
With this in mind, this paper seeks to create a strategy to rehabilitate the sidewalks and parks within the city with the residents’ help in order to create a sustainable green environment in the city, but with a particular interest in Bliss Street.
The strategy has an aim of increasing the number of trees and green spaces on Bliss Street, as well as raising awareness among the residents on the benefits of planting the trees. To do this, the funds will be raised to buy the seedlings. The local authorities will also have to be contacted for permission to plant trees. After the permission and the seedlings are obtained, a good strategy would be to engage the university students in the process given that it is they who are mostly walking along the street. Engaging them will take the form of meetings and a persuasive dialogue in order to draw support for the project. In the meetings, the students and other interested parties will be asked to reflect on how much they know about the environment and what they are willing to learn. If the strategy is established, it will be important to structure a way forward based on the interests and cooperation of the city’s residents.
In this task, clean environment is a great motivation. The city is slowly losing its appeal through the decline in the number of trees and green spaces. While it is a pilot project as there is many actions to implement, the objectives are clear cut and straight forward. The first objective is to plant and maintain trees on the street's sidewalks. Planting the trees will require funds for the seedlings and labor for the actual planting exercise. The maintenance, however, will require more than a few volunteers. This will be a collective effort as the trees need to be protected from destructive individuals, as well as, animals.
The second objective is to rehabilitate the sidewalks by planting grass to create a conducive ecosystem to continuous plant growth. This will require not only funding and volunteering, but also a commitment of the city residents to protect the grass at all times. The third objective is the most definitive one for the project. Involving the residents directly is the best way to ensure that they cooperate and develop the project, as they will be able to understand and value it accordingly.
Environmental issues cannot be dealt with in isolation of the local community. On Bliss Street, the local community mainly comprises the university students of the American University of Beirut. These are the main targets that will be approached to support the project. In order to plant and maintain the trees, as well as rehabilitate the street's sidewalks, the involvement of the local community will ensure the sustainability of the project. The general goal of the project is to increase the number of trees and green spaces on Bliss Street, as well as to make residents conscious of the benefits of planting the trees. The objectives, on the other hand, involve planting and maintenance of trees and sidewalks, as well as the involvement of local residents to make the project efficient and thus sustainable.
